circumstances of any of the volunteers will
permit them to continue. As part of its expansion and in
order to meet its needs on a more certain footing, the Trust
will need to increase its staff by appointing a full-time
Curator/Librarian (in addition to the Assistant Librarian) and
to increase to full-time the Administrator’s hours.
Fortunately, the Trust has enough space on
site for the proposed extension. It has commissioned architects
to design and cost both the resource centre and two new
residential flats. The total construction cost for the new
wing, including furniture and equipment, is estimated at
£1.95 million. A further £1.6 million will be
needed to increase the Trust’s endowment so that it can
meet its present and future running costs.
The proposed expansion is not only
necessary, but timely. The Trust is dedicated to promoting
education and research about regions and cultures that have
become more prominent both through British multiculturalism and
changes on the international scene. By enhancing its facilities
and resources as proposed, the Trust will be very well placed
to develop its work further and in new directions, and respond
to growing interest in the areas of knowledge it represents.
Although the Trust’s available
manpower is limited, it will start seeking advice from friends
and associates about sources of funding including the Lottery,
international agencies and Trusts. In particular, it will
appeal for support from private individuals who share interest
in the geographical areas and areas of scholarship promoted by
the Trust. Parts of the new building might be named after
individual donors.
